Getting Started

Are all skaters required to compete?

No. Competition is optional. If your skater is interested in competing, they should speak with a coach. The Director of Skating will determine when the skater is ready to compete based on their skills, confidence, and overall preparedness.

When are the competitions?

There are several competitions held throughout the skating season. RPFSC skaters will be eligible to compete in the following competitions during the 2026/2027 skating season:

What competition levels are available?

There are two competition pathways:

  1. Star Pathway: Star 1–10 and Gold (not every competition offers Star 1 events).
  2. Competitive Pathway: Pre-Juvenile — Juvenile — Pre-Novice — Novice.

Most RPFSC skaters compete in the Star pathway.

Registration & Preparing for Competition

Is there a training commitment for skaters who compete?

Yes.

  • Skaters competing at Star 2 and above are required to add at least one morning session each week to their regular schedule.
  • Skaters competing at Star 4 and above are strongly encouraged to add more than one morning session each week to their regular schedule.

How do I register my skater for a competition?

When competition registration opens:

  1. The coach will contact skaters who are ready to compete to determine whether they wish to enter.
  2. The coach will complete the competition registration and pay the competition entry fees on the skater’s behalf.
  3. The club will invoice the skater for the competition entry fees through Uplifter.

Important: Once you register, your skater may be scheduled to compete during any of the competition days (typically Thursday to Sunday). Please ensure your skater is available for all the competition days before committing to compete. The detailed competition schedule is typically released during the week of the competition.

How much does it cost to compete?

The cost to compete includes the competition entry fee and coaching fees for their time at the competition. Competition entry fees range from $130 to $280 per event, depending on your skater’s category.

As part of RPFSC’s commitment to providing affordable skating programs, the club will cover one competition entry fee per skater per year.

Approximate entry fees are:

  • Star 1: $75–$100 per event.
  • Star 2 & Star 3: $130 per event.
  • Star 4 (all age groups): $135 per event.
  • Star 5 to Star 10: $140 per event.
  • Adult Artistic & Gold Free Skate: $140 per event.

What if my skater needs to withdraw after registering?

If your skater withdraws after registration, the skater will be charged the competition registration fee unless the withdrawal is due to illness or another circumstance approved under the competition’s refund policy.

Competition Attire

What should my skater wear to competitions?

Competition attire includes either:

  • A skating dress with skin-tone tights, or
  • Black skating pants with a white or black skating shirt.

Hair should be neatly secured away from the face (for example, in a bun, braid, or ponytail). Avoid decorative hair accessories that could fall onto the ice and create a safety hazard.

What skating pants are recommended?

We recommend figure skating pants rather than traditional dress pants, as they are designed to provide the flexibility and range of movement needed for skating.

What tights are recommended?

Popular figure skating brands include Mondor and Jerry’s. Capezio dance tights are also an excellent option and are available in a wide range of skin tones.
