Winter Warm Up and Program Assistant Training – Saturday, September 8

Our Annual Winter Warm Up and Program Assistant Training will take place on Saturday, September 8 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The Winter Warm Up is for skaters in STAR 1, STAR 2, STAR 3, STAR 4 and STAR 5 and up. Your skater must be registered for Fall session in order to participate in the On-Ice portions of the day.

Program Assistant Training (CanSkate Clinic) 

Skaters who are in Star 2 and up who wish to Program Assist CanSkate during the 2018/19 Skating Season are asked to attend the CanSkate Clinic. Please come with the days you will be available to Program Assist for September to December.

CanSkate sessions run on:

  • Tuesdays – 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Thursdays – 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm
  • Saturdays – 12:00 pm to 12:45 pm

8:45 am

  • All skaters should arrive by this time to prepare for their on-ice or off ice session.

9:00 am to 10:00 am

  • On-Ice – Star 1, 2, 3 and 4

10:00 am to 11:00 am

  • On-Ice – Star 5 and up
  • Off-Ice – Star 1, 2, 3 and 4

11:00 am to 12:00 pm

  • CanSkate Clinic – Part 1

Volunteers Needed for Carnival!

Our Carnival on March 24 is sneaking up and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves!

Our Carnival Committee is looking for parents and guardians to participate in this upcoming event to be fun and successful. Click here for the list of volunteering opportunities available. Please be advised when you complete 5 volunteer hours for the Carnival, you will be credited $20 towards your skater’s Spring registration. Please email [email protected] for sign-up.

Winter Skills Display and Family Skate – Saturday, December 16

Our Annual Family Skate is coming up!  This event consists of a Skating Display, followed by our Family Skate. All RPFSC members and their families including siblings are welcome to skate together, after the skills display. There will be skate rentals and helmets available from 10.30am – 12.30pm. Photography is allowed at this event.

The Skating Display will showcase skaters from our PreStar and STAR 1-5 and up programs. They are working on something special for the upcoming Skating Display.

For the Family Skate, in the interests of safety and depending on the numbers, we will have two 30-minute sessions. All non-RPFSC members must sign in before skating and also be required to wear  CSA Certified Hockey helmet. These requirements for non members are essential for insurance coverage.

The Schedule for our event is as follows:

  • 9:00 am – STAR 2, 3, 4 and 5 an up Skaters arrive for Warm Up
  • 9:30 am – PreStar and STAR 1 Skaters arrive for Warm Up
  • 9:15 am – Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate
  • 10:00 am – 10:45 am  – Skating Skills Display
  • 10:45  -11:30 am – Session 1: Family Skate
  • 11:30 – 11:45 am – Ice Clean
  • 11:45 am – 12:15 pm – Session 2: Family Skate
  • 12: 15 – 12:45 pm – Program Assistants Fun Time

ALL skating lessons will be cancelled for this day.

Carnival Participants – Time to Measure Up for Your Costumes!

We have allocated the following times for our Carnival Participants to be measured for costumes. We will have volunteer moms taking measurements in Dressing Room #2. We ask that skaters allow enough time to get their measurements taken either before or after their lesson.

  • Saturday, December 2 – 9:00 am to 11:00 am
  • Tuesday, December 5 – 6:15 pm to 7:15 pm
  • Saturday, December 9 – 9:00 am to 11:00 am

As you may recall, we also ask that each skater’s family contribute five hours of volunteer time to the Carnival. This is in addition to the annual volunteer commitment to the club. A $20 credit will be given to families who complete five or more hours of volunteering for the Carnival. Assisting with measurements can count towards your five hours of volunteer time. At our Annual General Meeting held on Monday, October 16, the following individuals were elected for two year terms until the 2019 AGM:

*As per RPFSC Bylaws 6.21 – If a Director ceases to hold office, the Board may appoint a Member to as a replacement Director to take the place of such Director until the next annual general meeting.

The RPFSC Board will be meeting on November 22, 2017. Afterwards, we will announce the appointments to fill the vacancies of Vice President and Board Member at Large.

We also wish to extend our gratitude to Eileen Cervi, Kylie Goldsmith and Tomoko Mak who have left the Board.  We appreciate their gift of talent and time for the work they contributed to the Board while managing their respective portfolios. While they are no longer on the Board, they will continue their work in in the following areas:

National Volunteer Week – April 23 – 29

The RPFSC Board and our members collectively contribute to the various functions of running and managing a successful organization. During this week to honour volunteers across our country, we would like to say THANK YOU to all of our volunteer parents who generously contribute their time all skating season long to the operations and administration of our Club. Without the collective work of our volunteers, we would not be able to offer our skating programs in our community.

National Volunteer Week

Interested in Volunteering at 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships in Vancouver, BC?

The 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championship will be held in Vancouver at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre at UBC from January 8-14, 2018. The 2018 event will serve as a qualification event for the team that will compete at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea later that same year.

The dedication of the community, volunteers, and fans will be critical to the successful execution of the event. Anyone who is interested in volunteering at the 2018 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships is required to volunteer at either the Super Series SummerSkate competition or ISU Adult International competition.

  • 2017 Super Series SummerSkate – August 17-20, 2017 (Burnaby, BC)
  • 2017 ISU Adult International Skating Competition – August 21-26, 2017 (Richmond, BC)

The Skating Display will showcase skaters from our Starskate, Junior, Intermediate and Senior ice programs. Skaters from these levels were sent home with a handout to return indicating if they are available to take part or not.

Donations for door prizes are welcome. If you donate a prize, we offer one (1) Volunteer Credit for a $20 value prize. Gift Cards are perfect prizes. Please email [email protected] if you will be able to donate a prize. Prizes need to be delivered to our registration desk anytime up to Thursday December 8th.

Sadly, we will not be able to run our Potluck as we have in the past. Our growing numbers and the size of the venue no longer work to include this.

Volunteer Desk Duty Shifts to fill – starting September 12

Thank you to those that have signed up for Desk Duty shifts in the coming sessions. As you know, we have listed our desk duty shifts online for the whole fall/winter season.

There is a new duty that is ‘On call” person for our early morning skates. This is an easy shift that requires you to be at the rink in case of an emergency and to assist the Head Coach as required. For example, fire drill, evacuation or obtaining assistance for an injured skater.

We have the following shifts beginning the week of September 12 that have not been filled yet. 

  • Mondays – 7.00 – 7.45 am – biweekly (Sep 12Sep 26Oct 10 & Oct 24, 2016) (4 weeks)
  • Mondays – 6.45 – 7:45am – biweekly (Sep 19Oct 3Oct 17 & Oct 31, 2016) (4 weeks)
  • Tuesdays – 5.30 – 6.30 pm – Sept 13 – Oct 11, 2016 (5 weeks)
  • Thursdays – 6.00 – 6:45am  – Sep 15 – Oct 13, 2016 (5 weeks)
  • Thursdays – 6:45 – 7:45am – Sep 15 – Oct 13, 2016 (5 weeks)
  • Thursday – 3.30 – 4.30pm Sept 15 – Oct 13 2016 (5 weeks)
